Most “Shopify LTV calculator” posts give you one cell: AOV × purchases. That number is fine for a slide. It is not fine for deciding which products to push, which sources to scale, or when CAC actually pays back.
This page is the operator version. You get the spreadsheet formulas that survive a finance review — LTV windows, repeat rate, contribution margin, CAC payback — plus a worked example (illustrative numbers only). Then you see what a free LTV Profit Map adds when the sheet stops being enough: hero vs value-draining products, source-level value, and cohorts.
Spreadsheet math is the start. True Shopify lifetime value needs product, source, cohort, and journey.

Why a simple AOV × purchases formula lies
The classic formula looks clean:
Naive LTV = AOV × purchase frequency × lifespan
Three problems show up the moment you run a real Shopify store:
- Averages hide the mix. A $120 “store LTV” can be a blend of a $40 one-and-done SKU and a $280 subscription starter. Scaling the wrong first product scales the wrong customers.
- Purchase count ignores time. Twelve orders over six years is not the same as twelve orders in twelve months. Cash and CAC payback live on a clock.
- Revenue ≠ profit. Shipping, COGS, discounts, returns, and payment fees eat the number you celebrate in Ads Manager.
So when someone googles “shopify ltv calculator,” what they usually need is not a prettier average. They need windows, margins, and segments — then a way to see which journeys create the customers who actually stick.

Operator formulas: LTV windows, repeat rate, contribution margin, CAC payback
Use these in Sheets or Excel. They are formulas — not a claim that a live interactive calculator app ships on this page.
1) LTV by window (revenue)
Pick a window operators actually manage: 30 / 90 / 180 / 365 days from first order.
LTV_window = Total revenue from cohort in window ÷ New customers in cohort
Example: customers acquired in January; sum all of their orders through day 90; divide by January new customers. That is 90-day Shopify lifetime value for that cohort — not “all-time forever revenue divided by all customers ever.”
Run the same window by first product and by acquisition source when you can. Store-wide LTV without those cuts is how bad CAC decisions get funded.
2) Repeat rate (and second-order conversion)
Repeat rate = Customers with ≥2 orders ÷ Customers with ≥1 order
Second-order rate (window) = Customers with a 2nd order inside N days ÷ New customers
Repeat rate without a window is soft. Second-order rate inside 60 or 90 days is actionable: it tells you whether the first journey creates a second purchase before you burn the next media budget.
3) Contribution margin (the number finance cares about)
Revenue LTV lies when margin is thin. Contribution after variable cost is the useful denominator for payback.
Contribution per order ≈ Net revenue − COGS − shipping − payment fees − variable discounts/returns allocation
Contribution LTV_window = Sum of contribution from cohort in window ÷ New customers
If you only have blended margin %, start there and refine by product later:
Contribution LTV ≈ Revenue LTV × contribution margin %
That single adjustment often flips which “hero” product you thought you had.
4) Shopify CAC payback
Blended CAC = Total acquisition spend in period ÷ New customers acquired
CAC payback (days) ≈ days until cumulative contribution LTV ≥ CAC
Or, if you work in months:
Payback months ≈ CAC ÷ monthly contribution LTV
“Good ROAS” with a 14-month payback is not a growth strategy. Shopify CAC payback is the bridge between media math and cash.
5) Simple cohort sheet layout
Columns that matter:
- Cohort month (first order month)
- New customers
- Revenue D30 / D90 / D180 / D365
- Contribution D30 / D90 / D180 / D365
- LTV and contribution LTV for each window
- Repeat / second-order rate
- CAC and payback for that cohort
Keywords operators actually search — shopify contribution margin, shopify cac payback, shopify lifetime value — all collapse into that grid.
Worked example table (illustrative numbers — not Map UI numbers)
All figures below are ILLUSTRATIVE only. They are made-up demo math for the formulas — not Map UI numbers, not screenshots from a live LTV Profit Map, not a real store’s results, and not a claim about calculator accuracy.
| Metric | Cohort A (Meta) | Cohort B (Email/SMS) | Cohort C (Google Brand) |
|---|---|---|---|
| New customers | 1,000 | 400 | 250 |
| AOV (first order) | $74 | $82 | $91 |
| Revenue LTV D90 | $94 | $148 | $162 |
| Contribution margin % | 42% | 48% | 51% |
| Contribution LTV D90 | $39 | $71 | $83 |
| Blended CAC | $45 | $12 | $28 |
| CAC payback (approx.) | >D90 | ~D40 | ~D55 |
| Repeat rate (D90) | 18% | 31% | 27% |
What the sheet should scream:
- Cohort A “wins” on volume and can look fine on ROAS while contribution LTV sits under CAC inside 90 days.
- Cohort B and C look smaller in Ads Manager and larger in profit.
- AOV alone would have ranked C > B > A — which is directionally useful and still incomplete without payback and repeat.
If your current “Shopify LTV calculator” stops at AOV × 2.1 purchases, you never see this table. That is the lie.

What the free LTV Profit Map adds (hero vs value-draining products, source-level value, cohorts)
Formulas tell you what to compute. They do not stitch product, source, and cohort into one journey view. That is the gap the free LTV Profit Map is built for.
Connect Shopify (read-only). Setup is about ~2 minutes. No credit card. No theme changes. No storefront script required for the free path. You get a map of what your customers are actually worth — not another vanity dashboard.
What operators use it for:
- Hero vs value-draining products — Which first products start high-contribution journeys, and which SKUs look fine on AOV but drag LTV and payback.
- Source-level value — Not just “Meta ROAS,” but which sources mint customers whose Shopify lifetime value clears CAC on a real clock.
- Cohorts — Retention and value by when customers arrived, so you stop comparing a Black Friday binge cohort to an evergreen one as if they were the same machine.
- Prioritized next moves — A practical cut of where the money leaks: product mix, source mix, and journey patterns — so media and merchandising stop arguing from different spreadsheets.
Product note (not a hard gate): The richest signal usually shows up with 24+ months of order history and roughly $1M+ revenue. Smaller or younger stores can still connect and learn; expect thinner cohorts, not a locked door.

DIY formulas remain useful for finance reviews and board decks. The Map is what you use when the question becomes: which journeys create profitable customers — and what do we change Monday?
Proof (approved)
Clarity in the journey is not a soft metric. Approved results from brands that used Funnelytics to tighten customer journeys:
- VIIA / Bren: clarity → +27% AOV
- Four Sigmatic: +46% AOV
- ChappyWrap / Jessi Means: +20% mobile conversions
Those are approved journey outcomes — not invented “calculator accuracy” claims, and not Map demo figures. Any numbers in the worked table above remain illustrative only (not Map UI numbers).
